Who can take part in CODART congresses?

Full and associate members of CODART. For curators who are still in training, there is a limited number of places available. Participation in certain congress events, such as the visit to a private collection, may have to be limited.

Who can take part in CODART study trips?

Priority is given to full members. If slots are available, associate members are admitted, in order of application. In general, no more than 30 participants are admitted to study trips.

How can I as a member register for the upcoming congress and/or study trip?

Registration for CODART Events starts approximately five months in advance, when an easy registration form is posted on this website. See CODART Events. Members and associate members will be notified of this by e-mail.

Where can I find the reports and texts of lectures of the past congresses and/or study trips?

Who organizes CODART congresses, study trips and CODARTlight meetings?

The CODART director and CODART bureau organize these events. They are advised by a program committee consisting of CODART members and supported by a committee of local curators in the area where the event takes place. CODARTlight meetings are organized in a certain museum, city or region by the “local” CODART members.

What happens at the congresses?

CODART congresses include the following features:

  • Theme session: papers on the subject that forms the main theme of the congress and usually of the study trip.
  • Market of ideas: discussions in groups of no more than12 participants on issues concerning the work of CODART members. The results of the market of ideas sessions are presented and discussed in a plenary session, in the CODART Courant or on the website.
  • Plenary debate on the congress theme with the participation of an international panel of museum curators and other specialists.
  • Visits to museum collections or exhibitions, some of which are organized specifically for CODART.
  • Visits behind the scenes to museum restoration studios and storages.
    Receptions offered by host museums, the Dutch or Flemish diplomatic service.
  • A congress dinner, often in an exclusive historical location.
  • Opportunities for informal contact.

What happens during study trips?

CODART study trips are carefully prepared excursions to interesting destinations which even specialists do not often visit. The trips include working visits to storage rooms, print rooms and other places not open to the general public. During a trip, participants are able to meet all the local curators and study the collections together. Hosting curators are able to prepare cases and ask for help or opinions regarding questions of attribution, restoration, etc. The study trips thus offer the opportunity of establishing scholarly and professional contacts that can be of great value. Thanks to tight planning, the study trips pack in more high-quality visits than it would be possible for an individual to realize in the same length of time. During study trips as well as congresses, CODART is often treated to exhibitions mounted especially for our benefit.
