Founded in 1985, the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, is home to more than 65,000 objects from prehistory to the present. Its collection of Dutch and Flemish art numbers over 500 paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, and decorative arts. Particular highlights include paintings by Albrecht Bouts, Jan Davidsz. De Heem, and Frans Hals; metalwork by Jacques Jonghelinck and Paulus Willemsz. van Vianen; and prints by Rembrandt van Rijn, Hendrick Goltzius, and Lucas van Leyden, among many others. The museum’s works on paper represent are especially significant as a result of generous donations by Jean K. and Adolph Weil Jr.; Maida and George Abrams; and the children of Mrs. Harvey Fisk. The collection continues to grow; recent acquisitions and donations to the collection have included prints by Jan Harmensz. Muller and Jan van de Velde II, a portrait miniature by Gonzales Coques, and a statuette of Mercury by Giambologna. With an ever-changing slate of exhibition galleries, the Hood features thematic installations on topics such as printmaking during wartime; Dutch colonial networks; and small-scall sculpture.
