Dennis Weller, Curator of Northern European Art at the North Carolina Museum of Art, asks CODART members for more information about the current whereabouts of Still life with Musical Instruments by Carel de Moor (II).

Carel de Moor (1655-1738) was a painter of portraits and genres from Leiden. He studied with Gerrit Dou, Abraham van den Tempel, Frans van Mieris the Elder and Godefridus Schalcken. Still-life with Musical Instruments is the only still-life painting known by the artist. It is both signed and dated, “C. de Moor 1689” in a manner consistent with other signed and dated works.

The painting was last seen on the art market in Paris, Drouot-P. Berge and Associates, March 26, 2003, lot 27 and was also included in A. van der Willigen, F. Meijer, A Dictionary of Dutch and Flemish Still life Painters working in Oils, 1525-1725, Leiden 2003, p. 145. The auction house was contacted but did not keep any information in their files regarding the painting’s sale, nor did they have access to a high resolution photograph of the painting.

The picture will be part of an upcoming catalogue raisonné of Carel de Moor and because of its uniqueness in De Moor’s oeuvre, we would like to secure a better image and would be most grateful for any information pertaining to the picture’s location.
