From Thursday 24 May to Saturday 26 May 2018, the three-day conference of the Historians of Netherlandish art will take place at Het Pand in Ghent. Het Pand is the former Dominican monastery, located in the historic city center.

Call for sessions and workshops, 21 October 2016

The organizing committee has not set a specific conference theme, but would like to stress the ambition of the event, i.e. to stimulate clear new takes on art history in the 21st century. Indeed, since the days of Wölfflin and Panofsky, the formal and iconological approaches to art have been supplemented with insights and methodologies from nearly all academic disciplines, leading to a whole series of ‘turns’ (semiotic, visual, spatial, material, …), a globalization of Netherlandish art and to some extent a Babylonian confusion of speech. This conference aims at clarifying the paths to follow in the study of Netherlandish art, and to remold old and new ideas. Where do the sources meet the theory? What does the concept add to the fact? What is the impact of technical art history on iconology? Further more, we would like to stimulate interdisciplinary and especially multi-media approaches.

In preparation of the conference, the program committee is soliciting proposals for 15 sessions and 8 workshops. Each session and / or workshop will be 90 minutes, allowing for three 20-minute papers and time for discussion (possibly opened by a respondent).

We invite proposals for sessions and / or workshop of no more than 500 words explaining the status quaestionis (state of the art) and clearly indicating the goals and ambitions of the sessions and workshops. Please indicate the exact place where you would preferably like to hold the workshop. Please bare in mind that the second day of the conference, when most workshops will take place, will be in Bruges.
