The Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College holds more than 330 pre-1800 Dutch and Flemish works. Paintings number 54 and include such seventeenth-century masterpieces as Ter Brugghen’s Saint Sebastian Tended by Irene, Hobbema’s A Pond in the Forest, and Sweerts’s Self-Portrait, as well as other landscapes, portraits, genre paintings, history paintings, still lifes and a small seascape by Bonaventure Peeters. Fifteenth-century paintings by Vrancke van der Stockt and the Master of Saint Gudula are followed by sixteenth-century works by, among others, Coxie, Floris, Heemskerck, and Met de Bles.
Drawings by Abraham Bloemaert, Breenbergh, Van Goyen, Heemskerck, Koninck, Rubens, Speeckaert, Van Swanevelt, Van de Velde the Younger, and Vinckboons are joined by a well-preserved Ghent/Bruges School (ca. 1500) drawing and mid-seventeenth-century sketchbooks by Wilhelm von Bemel and Vincent Laurentsz. van der Vinne.
The extensive print holdings include works by Goltzius and Rembrandt, and a hand-colored Seghers etching. The collection is used widely in teaching in the arts, humanities, sciences, and social sciences at Oberlin College and its Conservatory of Music.
