CODART, Dutch and Flemish art in museums worldwide

Gemäldegalerie, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin

Information

The Berlin Gemäldegalerie is an encyclopaedic museum of European painting from ca. 1200 to 1800; for its bigger part it was assembled in the nineteenth century. It houses one the most important collections of early Netherlandish paintings in the world, of which especially the fifteenth century holdings (ca. 70 objects) are unrivaled. Among the works are most noticeably four paintings by Jan van Eyck, eight by Rogier van der Weyden, and three by Hugo van der Goes. For the seventeenth century, the collection of Dutch paintings is most remarkable, both in size as well as in quality. It covers all genres and nearly all great artists, thus giving an exceptional overview of the period. Especially noteworthy are nineteen works by Rembrandt, nine by Frans Hals, and two by Vermeer.
