On March 25, the Museo del Prado will open the exhibition Rubens. El
triunfo de la Eucaristía. The show will run until June 29. It will
include the six modelli owned by the Prado that Rubens painted as part
of the design of the tapestries of the Eucharist series, and also four
spectacular tapestries from the original series that belong to the
Convent of the Descalzas Reales in Madrid.
The six Prado modelli were enlarged at some point after Rubens’s
lifetime. These additions have now been removed, and the paintings have
been restored. This process is explained in one of the sections of the
exhibition.
The treatment of the panel supports of Rubens’s modelli has been used
to train panel restorers from several institutions from Europe and the
Unites States. This training was made possible by the collaboration of
the Museo del Prado and the Getty Foundation Panel Paintings Initiative.
The exhibition will travel to The J. Paul Getty Museum, where
Spectacular Rubens: The triumph of the Eucharist will be on view from
October 14 to January 4, 2015.
