Das Paradies auf Erden: Flämische Landschaften von Bruegel bis Rubens

Paradise on Earth: Flemish Landscape Painting from Bruegel to Rubens Exhibition: 1 October 2016 - 15 January 2017

The Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister presents an outstanding selection of Flemish landscapes from the 16th and 17th centuries, chosen from its own collection.

This offers a multi-faceted depiction of how this new genre developed in the 16th century, following every step up to the pinnacle of Baroque landscape painting in the 17th and early 18th centuries. Most of the paintings have not been exhibited for decades. This extensive examination of their painting technique and scientific processing carried out in the context of the current work on the academic catalogue of Flemish painting, and the restoration of several main works in the collection, amount to a rediscovery.

The exhibition will be complemented by landscape sketches and graphic art prints from the holdings of the Dresden Kupferstich-Kabinett, as well as external loans from important European museums wherever this is necessary to complete the overall depiction of the genre.

One particular focus will be on providing information in a visitor-friendly manner and the educational features which will accompany the exhibition. A richly illustrated, annotated exhibition catalogue will also be published.

CODART organized a CODARTfocus meeting on the occasion of the exhibition on 13 and 14 November 2016. Please find more information here.
