An exhibition of the Girl with a Pearl Earring and other Dutch paintings from the Mauritshuis attracted more than 10,000 visitors a day to the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art, and was the most popular in the world in 2012. More recently the show Vermeer and the Masters of Genre Paintings drew huge crowds to the Louvre. Is this a sign of the popularity of Dutch art? Or is there something else going on? Emilie Gordenker, Director of the Mauritshuis, will offer an international perspective on recent developments in museums that collect and display Dutch art. An introduction to this lecture will be given by Pieter Roelofs, Curator of 17th-century Dutch Painting at the Rijksmuseum.
This exclusive lecture is part of the Rijksmuseum en RKD Summer School. This biennial Summer School started in 1992 and is a co-production of the Rijksmuseum and RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History. The goal is to offer young art historians the opportunity to enrich and deepen their knowledge of Dutch art, and to foster the exchange of knowledge.
The Public Lecture is the one moment where everyone – including non-participants of the Summer School – is welcome to come and listen to an inspiring talk about Dutch art.
