Joseph-Benoît Suvée (1743-1807) de Bruges à Rome, un peintre face à David

Exhibition: 21 October 2017 - 23 January 2018

Joseph-Benoît Suvée (Bruges 1743 – Rome 1807) played a leading role in the French second half of the eighteenth century. Suvée spent his first years of training in Bruges, his native city,  and then moved to Paris where he studied in the studio of Jean-Jacques Bachelier. In Paris, Suvée taught many other Flemish artists upon their arrival in France.

This exhibition is the first show completely dedicated to the artist in Tours. Over a hundred paintings will accompany the two works by Suvee in the collection of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Tours.  For more information in French, see www.mba.tours.fr.

The exhibition is accompanied by the first monograph devoted to Suvee. The catalogue is edited by Sophie Join-Lambert, Director of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Tours and Anne Leclair, art historian. This study discusses an important number of entirely unpublished works coming from private collections, in France and abroad.
