Lambert Sustris, un artiste de la Renaissance entre Venise et l’Allemagne

Lambert Sustris, a Renaissance artist between Venice and Germany Exhibition: 18 November 2017 - 4 March 2018

The collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Caen includes a large Baptism of Christ by Lambert Sustris. It is one of the few paintings which was signed by the artist. Although little is known about Sustris, who was born in the Netherlands around 1510, his role in the artistic exchanges between the North and South of Europe is quite substantial. Around 1530 he traveled to Rome before settling in Venice in the 1540’s.

Through circa fifteen paintings from private collections and international museums, this exhibition wishes to examine Lambert Sustris’ contribution to landscape painting in the context of the cultural exchanges between The Netherlands, Italy, and Germany.

The exhibition is curated by Benjamin Couilleaux of the Cognacq-Jay Museum in Paris who is writing a thesis on the artist.
