Symposium KWAB: New Discoveries

Symposium: 13 September - 14 September 2018

On 13 and 14 September, the Rijksmuseum will organize an international, two-day symposium on the occasion of the exhibition KWAB: Dutch Design in the Age of Rembrandt that is to be held at the Rijksmuseum this summer. The exhibition showcases the most important examples of objects featuring wonderfully curious kwab- or auricular ornament, an important – yet largely neglected – phenomenon in the Dutch and European decorative arts of the seventeenth-century.

The symposium gathers renowned specialists, including Tessa Murdoch (V&A), Matthew Winterbottom (Ashmolean Museum), Jet Pijzel-Dommisse (Gemeentemuseum Den Haag) and Johan ter Molen, who will share new insights and technical and art historical discoveries on objects displayed within or related to the exhibition.

Participants of the symposium will have the opportunity to join a private viewing of the exhibition KWAB after opening hours on Friday evening 14 September.
