From the museum website

No other artist has matched either his technical virtuosity or his ability to create luxuriant arrangements of fruit and flowers. His fame derives in great measure from the realism with which he could convey such microscopic details as the veins of individual petals, the filaments of calyxes, drops of water, and insects. His style was widely emulated, and his influence on flower and fruit painters persisted until well into the nineteenth century.
