CODART, Dutch and Flemish art in museums worldwide

Capita Selecta

Exhibition: 22 April - 28 September 2014

Information from the museum, 3 March 2014

In 2014, the Broelmuseum has yet again included in its programme a remarkable exhibition on the theme of the portrait. For this presentation, the museum will collaborate with JCI Kortrijk, the local branch of the international Junior Chamber International network. The exhibition will be curated by Monia Warnez and Jan Leysen, both passionated art collectors. This exclusive exhibition seeks to bring contemporary artworks from private collectors into dialogue with portraits from the museum collection.

The portrait is one of the oldest forms of art; it runs like a common thread throughout the history of art. Contemporary artists still remain fascinated with this theme. However, does the portrait still manage to captivate private collectors? Do they still acquire contemporary portraits, and do these then portray the client or rather the artist?

This exhibition, with masterpieces from collectors from the Kortrijk region and Flanders, proves that the portrait has lost none of its appeal. It is a widely recurring theme in the oeuvres of both national and internationally renowned artists. An interesting encounter between portraits from the museum collection and those of private collectors.
