CODART, Dutch and Flemish art in museums worldwide

Courtauld Gallery

Information

Founded in 1932, The Courtauld Institute of Art is an independent college of the University of London. Housed at The Courtauld Gallery is one of the finest university art collections in the United Kingdom. Its collection of Dutch and Flemish art comprises over 90 paintings, around 900 drawings and 4600 prints, and 10 pieces of glass and ceramic. Areas of particular strength include paintings and works on paper by Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck and Pieter Bruegel the Elder and drawings by Maerten van Heemskerck, Rembrandt, Stradanus and Roelant Savery. The collection continues to grow, primarily through gifts and bequests. A significant recent acquisition of a rare impression of the first state of Bruegel’s Kermis at Hoboken has allowed us to reunite the print with its design drawing for the first time in centuries. The collection is used for teaching purposes by the Courtauld and other university faculties. A catalogue of the Flemish drawings is currently in preparation (2021). Information on individual works in the collection can be found on the gallery’s website, which will undergo a major revamp later this year and will launch in 2022.
