National Gallery of Victoria

The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) has rich holdings of Dutch and Flemish paintings, works on paper and decorative arts. Early Netherlandish art is represented by jewel-like panels by Simon Marmion and Hans Memling, the larger Triptych with the Miracles of Christ (ca.1479-91) and the splendid polychromed Carved retable of the Passion of Christ (ca. 1511-20). The NGV holds early and late paintings by Rembrandt, fine groups of portraits, still lifes, narrative and genre paintings as well as a superb group of landscapes by Salomon van Ruysdael, Meindert Hobbema, Jacob van Ruisdael and Aelbert Cuyp. Dutch and Flemish artists at the English court of Charles I are represented by exceptionally fine portraits by Daniel Mytens, Peter Lely, Jacob Huysmans and Anthony van Dyck. The print holdings are distinguished by the Rembrandt collection of 140 works and a complete collection of van Dyck’s Iconography. The drawing collection is small but includes fine sheets by Jacques de Gheyn II, Rembrandt, Arent de Gelder and Jacob Jordaens. Dutch decorative arts and furniture are represented by several important examples of blue and white delftware, good holdings of Dutch glass and a highly significant example of a Cushion cupboard (Kussenkast) dated to 1659.
