An eighteenth-century mansion on Lange Vijverberg in The Hague is home to Museum Bredius. The museum’s collection was developed by the art connoisseur, archival researcher, collector, and museum director Dr. Abraham Bredius (1855-1946), who bequeathed it to the municipality of The Hague. The collection consists primarily of seventeenth-century Dutch art, with 200 paintings, drawings, and etchings by over 150 artists.
The collection includes paintings by celebrated masters such as Rembrandt, Jan Steen, Aert van de Neer, Meindert Hobbema, Aelbert Cuyp, and Adriaen van Ostade. The museum also owns the only painting by Matthias Stomer in a Dutch public collection and the only “perspective box” in the Netherlands. It also possesses a large collection of Amsterdam silverware, dating from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries.
The collection’s highlights include The Wedding Night of Tobias and Sarah by Jan Steen (the two separated parts of which were later reunited), the only intact sketchbook by Jan van Goyen, and a self-portrait by Samuel van Hoogstraten.
