Call for Information: Two Portraits Sought for ‘Rembrandt 1632’ Exhibition

For an upcoming exhibition entitled Rembrandt 1632: Creation of a Brand, to be presented in Kassel and Gotha in 2026, the curators are actively seeking information regarding the current whereabouts of two specific paintings related to Rembrandt.

These works are important to the exhibition’s narrative, which focuses on Rembrandt’s pivotal first year in Amsterdam and the establishment of his artistic identity and reputation.

The paintings in question are:

Rembrandt workshop/copy, Self-portrait, panel, 21,8 x 17,5 cm.
Formerly in the collection of Josef Matsvanszky, Vienna.

Jan Lievens (?), Copy after Self-portrait of Rembrandt, panel, 26 x 21 cm.
Last recorded at the Alfred Brod Gallery in London (May 1963).

The organizers of the exhibition would be very grateful for any information concerning the current location or ownership of either of these works. If you possess knowledge about the whereabouts of these portraits or have any additional relevant information, please contact the exhibition Justus Lange at justus.lange@heritage-kassel.de.
