The Staatliche Schlösser, Gärten und Kunstsammlungen M-V (SSGK M-V) preserve, research and present the cultural and art-historical foundations of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. This includes some of the most beautiful and significant examples of architectural history and garden design in northern Germany, as well as the ducal art collections and art treasures of international standing from antiquity to the present. Part of the SSGK M-V is the Staatliches Museum Schwerin, where the position of Curator of Old Master Paintings and Sculptures from the Middle Ages to the mid-19th century is to be filled. Among the collections to be curated, the collection of 17th-century Dutch and Flemish paintings is of particular importance due to its size and quality.
We are looking for a:

Curator (m/f/d) of Old Master Paintings and Sculptures

 

Your tasks
• Scientific management of the painting and sculpture collection (publications, inventory, management of the database for paintings, sculptures and objects)
• Conception and realisation of exhibitions
• Compilation of scientific catalogues and publications
• Strengthening the profile of the collection and its further development, proposals for acquisitions
• Close cooperation with collection management, restorers and the communications and press office, marketing and event coordination
• Enhancing the profile of the collection and its further development, proposals for acquisitions
• Close cooperation with collection management, conservators and the press, marketing and event coordination department
• Processing loan requests, accompanying loans as a courier
• Administrative tasks
• Developing international collaborations, networking, fundraising, processing grant applications, acquiring sponsors
• Coordinating the future online collection

What we expect from you
• A master’s degree or equivalent university degree with a major in art history
• PhD in the field of Old Masters
• Knowledge of early modern art, especially Dutch and German painting of the 17th and 18th centuries
• Knowledge of medieval art, especially that of northern German regions
• Experience in exhibitions, publications and education
• Experience in controlling and monitoring of project calculations
• Experience in procurement and budget management desirable
• Experience in applying for funding
• Experience in working with archives
• Very good knowledge of German (native speaker level = Level C2) and very good knowledge of English (C1), good knowledge of another language, preferably Dutch, both spoken and written
• Creativity, fresh ideas and commitment
• Very good communication skills, team orientation, flexibility
