A European Collection. Masterpieces from the Khanenko Museum, Kyiv

Exhibition: 30 April 2026 - 10 February 2027

The Bohdan and Varvara Khanenko National Museum in Kyiv houses the most significant collection of Western art in Ukraine and ranks among the important European collections of its kind.

The paintings on display are largely the work of renowned European artists from the fifteenth to the nineteenth centuries. They offer an overview of key developments in European painting, following the didactically structured organization of the Khanenko collection.

Artists featured in the exhibition include Peter Paul Rubens, Bernardo Bellotto, Pieter Brueghel the Younger, Jacob Jordaens, and Antonio Canova. These are complemented by works from the workshops of Hieronymus Bosch and Rembrandt. Together, the ensemble illustrates Europe’s cultural interconnectedness and stands as a representative example of a shared cultural heritage that has developed over centuries.

The exhibition is the result of an extraordinary international collaboration between the Khanenko National Museum and the Museums of the City of Aschaffenburg. Selected works from the Khanenko Museum collection have already been shown at various European venues in recent years, both to ensure their preservation and to maintain public access. Now, at the Christian Schad Museum, they are brought together for the first time in this comprehensive exhibition—making it the most significant and extensive presentation of Ukrainian cultural heritage in Europe since the beginning of the war.

The exhibition is curated by PD Dr. Thomas Schauerte, Director of the Museums of the City of Aschaffenburg.
