The Picture Gallery at Buckingham Palace, one of the State Rooms that open to visitors each summer, has undergone a major re-display, almost doubling the number of paintings on show from 63 to 120.
The new presentation, which features a salon-style hanging, puts more works by some of the world’s greatest artists on show, bringing together paintings in inspiring and new ways. These include the famous Vermeer and several Rembrandts, but now also works by Ter Borch, Boeckhorst, and Dou. Other notable Dutch and Flemish works on view are:
- Aelbert Cuyp, An Evening Landscape with Figures and Sheep, ca. 1655-59
- Jan Steen, Cardplayers in a Tavern, ca. 1664
- Michiel Jansz van Miereveld, A Bearded Old Man with a Shell, ca. 1606
- Gabriel Metsu, Self-Portrait, ca. 1655-58
- Willem van Mieris, The Fruiterer’s Shop, 1732
- David Teniers the Younger, The Drummer, 1647
- Adriaen van Ostade, The Interior of a Peasant’s Cottage, 1668
Curators have drawn on historic watercolors, photographs, inventories and architectural schemes to devise the new display, which took 875 hours to hang and brings the room closer to its historic appearance. New emerald-green silk wall hangings and updated lighting, together with the increased number of paintings, create a striking visual transformation.
