Avercamp Returns to Kampen: The Seventeenth Century Through the Eyes of Hendrick and Barent Exhibition: 3 October 2026 - 31 January 2027

From 3 October 2026, the newly renovated Stedelijk Museum Kampen presents Avercamp Returns to Kampen: The Seventeenth Century Through the Eyes of Hendrick and Barent. Both Hendrick Avercamp and his nephew Barent Avercamp grew up and worked in Kampen. Although their famous winter scenes are now scattered worldwide, a collection of their works returns for the first time to the city where they originated.

Curated by museum conservator Loes Scholten, the exhibition features approximately fifteen paintings and 50 drawings shown alongside the River IJssel, surrounded by the local heritage depicted within the artworks. Exhibition visitors can imagine themselves in the seventeenth-century city and learn about daily life during that era. Beyond scenes of ice skating and winter recreation, the selection highlights the fishermen, farmers, and traders who worked along the water throughout the year, drawing explicit connections to Kampen’s contemporary topography and surviving historic landmarks.
