Peter Schatborn, emeritus head of the Rijksprentenkabinet at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, passed away on 8 September.

Schatborn was a specialist in seventeenth-century Dutch drawings and prints. He joined the Rijksmuseum in 1968, where he served as curator of drawings before being appointed head of the Rijksprentenkabinet in 1990, a position he held until his retirement in 2001. His research focused primarily on Rembrandt van Rijn, his studio, and his pupils, contributing significantly to the study of attribution and connoisseurship in Dutch works on paper through numerous publications and exhibitions.

Beyond his career at the Rijksmuseum, Schatborn held a deep and long-standing commitment to Museum Rembrandthuis. From the 1980s into the 2000s, he served on the museum’s Supervisory Board, contributed as an editor for its journal Kroniek van het Rembrandthuis, and curated several exhibitions with accompanying catalogues. He also served as a guest scholar at the Getty Research Institute and collaborated on exhibition projects with international institutions, including the Fondation Custodia in Paris and The Frick Collection in New York.
