Information
Established in 1866, Musée Mandet houses fine arts, decorative arts, design, and archeological collections in an eighteenth-century mansion. The museum’s founder and first curator, Francisque Mandet (1811–1885), assembled an interesting body of northern school paintings. Through the Société du Musée, Mandet acquired works of every genre: still life, genre scenes, portraits, landscapes, religious works, and animal paintings. One room in the museum is dedicated to northern school paintings of the seventeenth century, bearing witness to the curator’s taste for this period, which he considered the beau idéal. The collection includes works by Ferdinand Bol, Jacob Adriaensz. Backer, and Frans Ykens but also some examples of Delftware. Four of the northern school works are the property of the Musées Nationaux Récupération (MNR) and are on long-term loan to Musée Mandet from the Musée du Louvre.
