CODART, Dutch and Flemish art in museums worldwide

Museo Arocena

Information

The Museo Arocena, inaugurated in Torreón, northern Mexico, in 2006, is dedicated to presenting European, Mexican, and Viceregal art alongside modern and contemporary pieces. Built on the collecting tradition of the Arocena family, the museum preserves significant works that link regional history with broader artistic traditions.

Within this context, the museum houses a varied group of Dutch and Flemish artworks from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, ranging from devotional imagery to grand-scale portraiture. Flemish panel paintings such as the Man of Sorrows and a Virgin and Child reflect the enduring influence of late Gothic traditions, while three carved wooden depictions of the Virgin and Child attest to the sculptural production of the period. Portraits by the Flemish painter Anselmus van Hulle illustrate the refinement of Baroque portraiture, while the Dutch painter Matthias Stom is represented with a dramatic Saint Dismas, characterized by his tenebrist style. Monumental Flemish tapestries, including the Vision of Constantine, demonstrate the narrative power and opulence of textile art.
