Fêtes et Kermesses au temps des Brueghel

Festivities and Fairs in the time of Brueghel Exhibition: 16 March - 14 July 2019

On the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the death of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, the Musée de Flandre is organizing an exhibition on the topic of festivals and fairs in the age of Bruegel.

Scenes of town fairs and festivities are a popular theme in the work of  Pieter Bruegel the Elder, a brilliant painter. However, characters and symbols were made popular thanks to a whole generation of talented painters. Bruegel’s contemporaries Marten van Cleve and Pieter Balten would later succeed him with, together with his, two sons, Pieter II and Jan I. The exhibitions shows how artists continued to re-develop the theme.

For the first time since the Musée de Flandre reopened in 2010, an exhibition occupies the entire museum (1000 m2). The exhibition includes loans from many international and national museums.
