Toledo Museum of Art Acquires Painting by Dirck Hals

The Toledo Museum of Art has acquired a panel by Dirck Hals.  Merry Company on a Terrace, painted in 1623, depicts a group of ten male and female revelers dressed in fine fashion enjoying the day. Seated and standing in a variety of poses across the width of the canvas, the animated party is flanked by a statue of Eros and architectural details.

Dirck Hals was a younger brother of Frans Hals, whose work TMA also has collected and whose family portraits form the international loan exhibition Frans Hals Portraits: A Family Reunion, which opened this month. The panel is on view at gallery 23.
