A Study Visit to Alkmaar and Haarlem
On Monday, 25 November, CODART organizes a CODARTfocus meeting dedicated to the first large retrospective exhibition on Maarten van Heemskerck, held this fall at the Frans Hals Museum, the Teylers Museum and the Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar. No less than half of the paintings attributed to the sixteenth-century artist will be brought together in the Netherlands. The exhibition was curated by Van Heemskerck expert Ilja M. Veldman, together with Christi Klinkert, Marrigje Rikken, and Marleen Ram
During the CODARTfocus meeting we will bring an exclusive visit to all three locations. We begin the day at the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem with an introduction to the exhibition by its curators. The Frans Hals Museum presents the first part of the exhibition, which focuses on Van Heemskerck’s early career and aims to show how the talented Van Heemskerck adopted and excelled in a remarkable new way of painting. His work is compared with that of his contemporaries such as Gossaert and Van Scorel.
Our next stop is the Teylers Museum where we will have lunch and visit the second part of the exhibition, highlighting prints and drawings by the artist. Following in the footsteps of Italian artists such as Raphael, Van Heemskerck began drawing his designs for prints on a large scale, which resulted in a large production and rapid fame. A selection of his finest prints from the museum’s own collection will be on display, supplemented by loans from the Noord-Hollands Archief and the Rijksmuseum.
After this visit, we will travel to Alkmaar together by coach. At the Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar the third part of the exhibition tells the story of Van Heemskerck’s trip to Italy and shows how this experience led to bold and, for the time, spectacular works.
