To celebrate its opening in 2025, BRON Research Centre (Musea Brugge), in collaboration with the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA, Brussels), is organizing a two-day conference on new and ongoing research on the oeuvre of Hans Memling. The conference ‘Zooming In and Out: Reconsidering Hans Memling’ takes place from 20-21 November 2025 at BRUSK in Bruges. They are currently inviting proposals for papers for the conference, with a submission deadline of 30 March 2025.
Call for papers
The aim of the conference is to highlight and stimulate new interdisciplinary research on the painter by leading and new scholars in the field. They welcome papers that ‘zoom in’ (case studies of individual paintings) and focus on subjects like attribution, organization of the workshop, or patronage, but they also invite studies that ‘zoom out’, by addressing broader cultural historical and historiographical issues, and everything in between—as long as the main focus of your paper is Hans Memling and/or his oeuvre. Contributions may draw upon a variety of disciplines, including (technical) art history, social and cultural history, conservation and conservation science.
Submission procedure
Proposals for 25-minute papers are invited, preferably in English, or in French.
Proposals should be submitted by Sunday 30 March 2025 at the latest. Each submission must consist of a single PDF file with the following components:
- A 100-word biography
- A 300-word abstract
- One or two relevant images (e.g. artworks, archival documents, data visualization)
Proposals will be evaluated based on relevance, clarity, novelty, and contribution to the field. They seek papers that reflect critically on the source material and methodologies employed. Proposals from scholars at all stages of their academic careers are welcome, including final-year master’s students, graduate students, early career researchers and established scholars.
