Rembrandt: 1633

Presented by Dr. Anne T. Woollett, Associate Curator of Paintings, The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles

The years immediately following Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn´s (1606-1669) arrival in Amsterdam in late 1631 were amongst the most intensive periods of creative output of his long career. Ambitious and talented, he strove to find new visual solutions to the traditional practice of portraiture, and responded to the challenges of older masters such as Rubens by reinterpreting beloved sacred and historical subjects. To his diverse undertakings Rembrandt brought an equally varied technique and an opulent palette intensified by dramatic light effects. Dr. Anne T. Woollett delves into Rembrandt´s personal and artistic activities in the richly innovative year of 1633, the year he painted the two majestic portraits on view at the MFAH.
