The splendour of Burgundy

Symposium: 12 May - 14 May 2009

Information from the museum, 9 April 2009

Within the framework of the exhibition ‘Charles the Bold – The Spendour of Burgundy’, the Groeninge Museum and the Alamire Foundation (Catholic University of Louvain), in collaboration with Concertgebouw Brugge and the Radboud University of Nijmegen, are organising a symposium entitled The Splendour of Burgundy.

The aim of the symposium is to give a broad impression of the culture prevailing at the ducal court in Burgundy from the time of Philip the Good (1419 onwards) until the death of Mary of Burgundy in 1482. In contrast to many other symposia, which concentrate on one specific area of investigation, this symposium will seek to establish a dialogue between the academic disciplines of history, music, art and literature. Working with lectures and discussion groups, experts from these various fields will try to give an overall impression of the court culture as a whole. With this aim in mind, two wide-ranging general sessions will be held, during which the themes of “Power and representation” and “Festive culture” will be examined by means of a multi-discipline approach. In addition, more specific issues will be dealt with during the related series of specialist sessions.

In view of the international nature of this symposium, the official language will be English.
