First announced as Dutch opulence and intimacy: the art of home and private life, 1640-1700.
Museum information
Art & Home features nearly fifty richly luminous 17th-century paintings and over seventy magnificent domestic objects. The exhibition contains works by such celebrated masters as Rembrandt, Gabriel Metsu, Gerard Terborch, Pieter de Hooch and other 17th -century Dutch artists, as well as objects of gold, silver, glass and wood.
The exhibition draws on loans from museums and private collections with the finest holdings of Dutch art in Europe and the United States, including the Rijksmuseum, State Hermitage Museum, National Gallery of Art, J. Paul Getty Museum, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The idea of home as a private and virtuous realm, devoted to marriage, family and personal pursuits, developed for the first time in the Netherlands in the 17th century. Art & Home explores the pivotal role that artists had in documenting and defining attitudes about the home that are still relevant today.
