At the end of 2020, the RKD received a remarkable donation from the Mauritshuis: 250 nineteenth-century reproduction prints and drawings of paintings in the Mauritshuis collection.
The donation included 90 design drawings and 97 line engravings of works of art in the Mauritshuis’ collection. The prints were published in De voornaamste schilderijen van het Koninklijk Kabinet, te ‘s-Gravenhage, in omtrek gegraveerd, met derzelver beschrijving (1826-1830) [The principal paintings of the Royal Cabinet, at The Hague, engraved in outline, with their description], which was published on the initiative of Johan Steengracht van Oostcapelle (1782-1846), the first director of the Mauritshuis. This museum catalogue is the first illustrated collection catalogue in the Northern Netherlands, and moreover, it would remain the Mauritshuis’s only annotated catalogue for nearly half a century.

Steengracht’s museum catalogue has not previously been the subject of a monographic study. For the current book, the authors conducted research into the creation and the significance of the mother of all museum catalogues, as they continue to appear in the Netherlands to this day.
Mauritshuis in lijn was written by Quentin Buvelot (Mauritshuis), Ingrid Vermeulen (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam), and Charlotte Dalmijn (PhD student at Cambridge University), and edited by RKD curator Yvonne Bleyerveld.
The book presentation will take place at the RKD on 24 October.
