Information from the curator, 26 June 2016
Dutch painter Caesar van Everdingen (1616/1617–1678) was a contemporary of Rembrandt and the most notable classical painter of his time. This exhibition will feature striking historical scenes, handsome portraits of the bourgeoisie and sensual images inspired by the ancient world, amongst the others from the Rijksmuseum and Mauritshuis collections. The highlight of the exhibition is an imposing group portrait depicting members of the Old Civic Guard of Alkmaar (201 x 350 cm). Comprising a total of 30 works, this is the first exhibition to showcase such a broad selection of van Everdingen’s art. It is organised in collaboration with the Stedelijk Museum in Alkmaar, the Netherlands.
