Dutch Painting: with Gary Schwartz

Lecture: 30 March 2026

Join world-renowned art historian, Gary Schwartz, for an exploration of Dutch Painting, his new volume in Thames & Hudson’s World of Art series. Bringing a fresh perspective, Schwartz examines the rich diversity of seventeenth-century painting through works by celebrated artists – including Rembrandt, Judith Leyster and Vermeer – alongside lesser known but compelling figures, such as Adriaen van de Velde and Gesina ter Borch.

Drawing on works from the National Gallery and other major museum collections, Schwartz will uncover how questions of patronage, global trade, gender, race, artistic identity and the art market shaped what artists were creating in this period. With new insights into attribution and artistic exchange across Europe and Asia, see how Dutch art has been viewed from the seventeenth century to today.

Following the lecture, Schwartz will be joined in conversation by Bart Cornelis, the National Gallery’s Curator of Dutch and Flemish Paintings. They’ll discuss the themes of the book and the history of the Gallery’s own seventeenth-century Dutch paintings.
