Fan Leaves, Between Europe and Japan

Exhibition: 1 October 2021 - 29 May 2022

As an echo to the exhibition“Pour la galerie. Fashion and Portraiture” on the relationship between art and fashion, the Graphic Arts Department is interested in a fashion accessory that is both an artistic medium and the subject of numerous representations: the fan. Several hand fans that were made in the Netherlands around 1760-70 are on display.

The three cabinets on the second floor contain fan leaves, drawn or engraved, intended to be mounted or used as models, representations of their use in Europe from the 16th to the early 20th century, as well as a collection of engravings and Japanese fans. This presentation includes an exceptional series of eight sheets painted in the 18th century, shown to the public for the first time.
