The Francken dynasty of painters formed the backbone of early Baroque art in Antwerp over several generations. A large panel by its most important representative, Frans II Francken (1581–1642), was bequeathed to the Kunstmuseum Basel in 2004. With imagination, wit and great attention to detail, Francken employs the fluid, spirited glazing technique characteristic of his late work to depict the adoration of Christ by the three wise men from the east. At risk of damage from the nails used to anchor it later on, the panel required restoration, which not only improved its stability but also enhanced the aesthetic effect of the painting. The regained masterpiece will be exhibited in the context of other works by the artist and his Antwerp contemporaries.
