The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum is opening its new Contexts Exhibition Room with this exhibition devoted to the painter Gerard David. The Museum’s permanent collection has a panel by this artist of The Crucifixion, considered to be an early work. It is one of the works chosen for this first exhibition devoted to landscape in the art of Gerard David. Through a series of outstanding oil paintings, it analyses the importance of this theme in the artist’s work and the way in which his landscapes were far more than merely backdrops to the main scene. The exhibition also looks at antecedents and at the development of the genre by Patinir, who would be the artist to define one of the most important genres for the history of art in years to come.
