In monumental interiors, most attention is paid to the primary rooms, but is this justified? On Friday afternoon, 27 September, the 24th Interior Platform will be held on the theme of “secondary spaces”.
Several questions immediately arise: what do we mean by secondary spaces and where are these spaces located? Is a secondary space secondary for everyone? Or can a secondary space be a primary space for someone else? Until the twentieth century, for example, the lives of staff in many institutions took place largely in secondary spaces. The servants regularly brought their own furniture as well as their own clothes.
In terms of authenticity, finishes, and furnishings, “back rooms” are often very interesting. Innovations and modernizations were often not carried out here. When restoring, modifying or extending a monument, secondary rooms are regularly sacrificed. Changes in function, technical installations, comfort improvements and sustainability often completely change the experience of the secondary spaces.
This seminar will explore and explain the topic from different angles: what goes on behind the scenes? Lectures are presented in Dutch and English.
This in-person meeting in Amersfoort is also available as a live-streamed webinar. The event is free but registration is required.
