Jan Anthonisz. van Ravesteyn – Portrait of Nicolaas Cromhout

Exhibition: 19 February - 30 June 2019

Portrait of Nicolaas Cromhout (1561–1641) is not only a sublime example of the work of the accomplished Hague portraitist Jan Anthonisz. van Ravesteyn (c. 1572–1657), but at the same time the life story of the sitter brings a memento of important historical event from the history of the Northern Netherlands – an event that happened precisely 400 years ago, in May 1619.

So who is this serious man, looking towards the visitor with kind yet respectful gaze and what was his role in the history of the young Dutch Republic? You can judge his story yourself thanks to a temporary exhibition of van Ravesteyn´s splendid portrait.
