Recently the Rijksmuseum acquired four drawings by the artist Jacob Cats (1741-1799) showing the Dutch region “het Gooi”. These works are the largest and artistically most ambitious known landscapedrawings by the artist. Cats´drawings are on show in the printroom, together with landscape drawings by Dutch artists from the seventeenth century. There are apparent differences, in Cats´ drawings the staffage features much more prominently. His human figures tell their own story and form a substantial part of the depiction.
