About the exhibition

This fall the luxurious lifestyle and pomp of the old Rotterdam elite returns to the Schielandshuis, main location of Museum Rotterdam. The period rooms of this 17th century city palace are once more filled with a grandiose display of wealth from the trading port on the River Meuse. Lavish furnishings, gorgeous clothing and beautiful paintings, whose owners seem to have just left the room, show a glimpse of a life of opulence.

Noteworthy Rotterdam citizens Gijsbert Karel van Hogendorp and Elie van Rijckevorsel take center stage as members of prominent Rotterdam families. Van Hogendorp ensures a smooth political transition to the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the early 19th century, while gentleman-scientist Van Rijckevorsel contributes to the explosion of knowledge in the latter half of that era.
