The Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum in Aachen has taken up the task to make its own collection the focus of an exhibition. It shows that the permanent collection is by no means a static entity, but that much is happening: acquisitions, research, restorations.
Among a varied array of art works are the recently acquired Last Judgment by Nicolaes Eliasz Pickenoy and two paintings on long-term loan: The Return of Tobias an early painting by Rembrandt on which Dou collaborated and a copy after Dürer’s etching The Adoration of the Shepherds by Cornelis van Dalem and Gillis Mostaert. The exhibition also shows works that have returned to Aachen, after having disappeared at the end of World War II.
