As accompaniment to its exhibition Schilders van de ziel: symbolisme in Frankrijk (Painters of the soul: symbolism in France, Singer is displaying paintings by George Hendrik Breitner and Isaac Israëls in its series of presentations of work from its own collection. The museum owns a surprising variety of works by these Dutch Impressionists, most of which have not been on display for quite a while.
Brothers in art
Breitner and Israels played an important role in the renewal of art in Holland around 1890. Artists and writers who turned away from academic tradition in the direction of l’art pour l’art found each other in a movement called the Tachtigers.
