Three Netherlandish Madonnas. Completion of Restoration presents three paintings from the Hermitage’s collection of Netherlandish art that have recently undergone conservation. One of them, The Virgin Mary in Glory by Jan Provoost, is familiar to visitors from the museum’s permanent display. The other two works – Madonna and Child by Jan Provoost and Madonna and Child by Jan Gossaert – have long remained in storage and are now being shown to the public for the first time in many years.
All three paintings were created in the early sixteenth century, on the eve of the iconoclastic movement that swept across Flanders and destroyed countless religious works of art. Their survival makes these Madonnas especially significant today. The exhibition also features a multimedia kiosk with materials documenting the restoration process, as well as a film dedicated to Provoost’s The Virgin Mary in Glory.
