Under the Sign of Rubens presents 67 paintings of more than 50 key artists of seventeenth-century Flanders. The works are brought together from nine museums, including the Yekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts, the Nizhny Novgorod Art Museum, the Arkhangelskoye Estate Museum, the Voronezh Regional Art Museum, the Serpukhov Historical and Art Museum, the Tula Museum of Fine Arts, the Uglich State Historical, Architectural and Art Museum, Yaroslavl Art Museum and State Historical and Art Museum New Jerusalem, as well as from the private collections of Vladimir Nekrasov, Valeria and Konstantin Mauergauz, Dmitry Garibyan, Alexey Semin, and Art Center Moscow.
The exhibition includes works from the studios of the main artists of the Flemish school: Anthony Van Dyck, Jacob Jordaens, Frans Snyders, Jan Brueghel the Velvet, David Teniers the Younger and Peter Paul Rubens. It also shows some extremely rare works by authors whose artistic heritage is counted today in single work, as for example the unique signed work by Johanna Vergauwen.
Especially noteworthy are two works by Peter Paul Rubens and his workshop: The Coronation of Roxana by Alexander the Great and the painting The French King Henry IV Seizes the Fortunate Opportunity to Conclude Peace. They are part of a private collection and are now presented to the public for the first time.
In the process of preparing the exhibition, the paintings selected for display were carefully and comprehensively studied. Some of them received new attributions, in many cases the dating and provenance were also clarified.
The exhibition is accompanied by an academic catalogue (in Russian), prepared by Vadim Sadkov in cooperation with the curators from regional museums.
