Around forty paintings of old masters from the Brukenthal Museum in Sibiu, Romania will be exhibited in Het Noordbrabants Museum in the summer and autumn of 2016. The Brukenthal Museum collection was assembled by Baron Samuel von Brukenthal (1721-1803), a passionate and knowledgeable art collector. His collection includes many masterworks from various European schools of painting.
Flemish and Dutch masters
The exhibition, Masterworks from the Brukenthal Collection, presents Flemish and Dutch masters from the time before and after Hieronymus Bosch and explains their influence on painters from other European countries. It will include works from Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling, Marinus van Reymerswaele, Jacob Jordaens, David Teniers, Jan van Goyen, Leonaert Bramer and Pieter Brueghel de Jonge. Together with Bosch, they raised the art of painting in the Low Countries to the very highest standard. The works have remained in Sibiu for the last 200 years so most of them have never been seen abroad before.
