As part of the Het verleden van Groningen (Groningen’s Past) event the museum will put a selection of its historical portraits on show. The way people who lived during the Golden Age are perceived, is strongly coloured by the famous Dutch portraiture of the era. At the time, beautiful portraits were painted in Groningen as well, by Jan Jansz de Stomme among others, but also by painters no longer known by name.
The presentation in the West Oval Room will focus on four groups from society, putting as many married couples as possible on show. Those portrayed are either noblemen, mayors, merchants or professors, together with their spouses.
