In the open restoration study that the Limburg Foundation for Art Restoration (SRAL) has installed in the Bonnefantenmuseum, Georg Sturm’s monumental wall paintings from the Rijksmuseum are being restored. The Bonnenfantenmuseum is showing 16 of these canvases, showing how they functioned in the Gallery of Honor, the Front Hall and the Vestibule of the Rijksmuseum. Also on display are preparatory drawings, stencils and color studies by Pierre Cuypers. The exhibition shows how historical techniques are being employed to bring back Cuypers’s original decorations. For this presentation the restorers have built a reconstruction of one of the lunettes in the Gallery of Honor in true size.
