Vision and material: interaction between art and science in Jan van Eyck’s time

Research Conference: 24 November - 26 November 2010

The Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van België (KVAB), the Koninklijk Instituut voor het Kunstpatrimonium/Institut Royal du Patrimoine artistique (KIK/IRPA) en The Impact of Oil, the NWO-project of the University of Amsterdam, Utrecht Universityand the Rijksmuseum organize a research conference to celebrate 10 years of Flemish Academic Centre (VLAC), an IAS (Institute for Advanced Study) of the KVAB (Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van België voor Wetenschappen en Kunsten), comparable with the Dutch NIAS in Wassenaar.

A six-month project and fellowship awarded to the late Carol Purtle in 2003
formed the starting-point of several projects and cooperations with an international group of scholars, in which the art of Jan van Eyck enjoys a special focus. The conference program refelcts this dominant theme.

The conference also coincides with the last phase in the current doucmentation and conservation project supervised by professors Anne van Grevestein and Ron Spronk. They will both speak at the conference and will report on their findings.

A detailed program and registration form can be found at www.kvab.be/vlac.aspx, which also contains information about related conferences.
